East Bridgewater, MA (September 1, 2025) – Four people were injured on Friday morning in a crash involving a Bridgewater Fire Department ambulance at the intersection of Bedford Street (Route 18) and West Street (Route 106), according to local police. The collision was reported around 9:47 AM.
Police said the ambulance, which had its lights and siren activated, was transporting a patient northbound on Route 18 to Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital when it collided with a passenger vehicle at the intersection.
Two firefighter/paramedics inside the ambulance, the patient being transported, and a passenger from the other vehicle all sustained injuries. Additional ambulances from East Bridgewater and Bridgewater responded, taking the four injured individuals to nearby hospitals. Authorities described the injuries as non-life-threatening.
The crash caused significant disruption at the busy junction of Routes 18 and 106 as first responders worked to clear the scene, treat victims, and investigate the circumstances of the collision. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by police.
Ambulance-Involved Crashes in Massachusetts
While emergency vehicles such as ambulances are afforded the right-of-way under state law when using lights and sirens, collisions can and do occur, especially at busy intersections. The urgency of responding to emergencies or transporting patients increases the risks, both for first responders and for other drivers on the road.
Friday’s crash in East Bridgewater demonstrates how even a lifesaving mission can be interrupted by a sudden collision. With four people injured, including the patient already in transit, this incident underscores the vulnerability of both emergency personnel and civilians during these types of crashes.
Massachusetts law requires drivers to yield to emergency vehicles, but accidents may still occur when drivers fail to recognize sirens, misjudge timing at intersections, or when roadway congestion leaves little room to maneuver.
For those injured in ambulance-involved crashes, the aftermath can be particularly complex. Victims may face medical recovery alongside questions of liability and responsibility. Access to reliable medical care, legal guidance, and recovery planning becomes critical.
