East Palo Alto, CA (August 12, 2025) – A multi-vehicle collision on Highway 101 early Sunday morning claimed the life of a 72-year-old San Leandro woman and left two others with serious injuries. The California Highway Patrol reported that the crash happened around 2:00 a.m. near East Palo Alto when an Acura SUV rear-ended a Toyota Rav4, setting off a chain reaction that involved four vehicles.
The initial impact caused a Subaru SUV to crash into the center median, where it was struck by a BMW sedan. The driver of the Subaru, identified as Pamela Beran, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two people inside the Acura suffered serious injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
CHP officers arrested the Acura’s driver on suspicion of driving under the influence causing injury. The crash shut down multiple lanes of Highway 101 for several hours while investigators examined the scene and crews cleared debris.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Pamela Beran, and we hope for the swift recovery of those injured.
DUI Accidents in California
Driving under the influence remains one of the leading causes of deadly crashes across California. Early morning collisions, like this one on Highway 101, often occur when impaired drivers are returning from late-night activities, increasing the risk for everyone sharing the road. Chain-reaction crashes on high-speed freeways can be especially devastating, as multiple impacts compound the severity of injuries and make it difficult for other drivers to avoid the wreckage.
In this case, authorities allege that the Acura’s driver was under the influence, a factor that can significantly impair judgment, slow reaction times, and reduce coordination. Public safety officials continue to stress that impaired driving is entirely preventable, urging drivers to use rideshare services, designate a sober driver, or find alternative transportation after consuming alcohol or drugs.
