Ector County, TX (August 18, 2025) – A devastating two-vehicle crash in Ector County on Friday night claimed the lives of two individuals and left four others injured. The fatal incident occurred at the intersection of FM 2020 and Knox Ave, where a Chevrolet pickup and a GMC SUV collided.

Medics and fire crews worked to assist those suffering from injuries after the collision. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported that 61-year-old Juan Manuel Nunez-Quiroz was driving a 2019 Chevrolet 2500 southbound on Knox Ave. As he approached the intersection with W. University Blvd, he failed to stop at a posted stop sign and was struck by a westbound 2012 GMC Yukon.

The impact proved fatal for Nunez-Quiroz and one of the Yukon passengers, 32-year-old Tyson Cooper Avery, who were both pronounced dead at the scene. Among the injured were 34-year-old Rachel Avery and three minors, all of whom sustained a variety of injuries in the crash. They were transported for medical treatment, though the extent of their injuries has not been fully detailed.

DPS troopers are continuing to investigate the collision. Further details, including any contributing factors or updates on the condition of the injured, have not been released at this time.

Our deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy.

Deadly Intersection Collisions in West Texas

Accidents at intersections such as FM 2020 and Knox Ave can quickly turn tragic when drivers fail to yield or obey traffic control signs. In rural counties like Ector, where highways and local roads intersect frequently, stop sign violations are a common cause of serious crashes. This fatal event is a sobering reminder of the importance of heightened awareness and adherence to traffic laws at all times.

Throughout Texas, intersection-related collisions remain a significant source of fatalities. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, thousands of fatal crashes occur each year on state and local roads, many of which stem from failure to yield or disregarding traffic signals.

For families dealing with the aftermath of a fatal crash, the legal and emotional challenges can be overwhelming. While medical attention and emergency care are the immediate priority, it’s equally important to document the incident, understand rights related to wrongful death claims, and seek guidance during the recovery process.
