Erie, PA (July 28, 2025) – A teenage driver was hospitalized Sunday afternoon following a two-vehicle crash on Erie’s east side that remains under investigation by local authorities.
The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. on July 27, at the intersection of East 7th St and Marne Rd. According to a report from Erie police, the teen was traveling northbound when their vehicle was struck by an eastbound SUV. Investigators say the SUV ran a stop sign before crashing into the teen’s car at the intersection.
Emergency medical services responded quickly and evaluated the teen at the scene. The driver, whose name has not been released, sustained a hand injury and was transported to a nearby hospital for further care. No other injuries were reported in the crash, and both vehicles remained on scene as officers gathered witness statements and examined roadway conditions.
The crash temporarily disrupted traffic in the area but has since been cleared. No charges have been announced, and the case remains under active review by Erie law enforcement.
We extend our best wishes to the injured teen for a smooth and full recovery.
Stop Sign Crashes and Teen Drivers in Pennsylvania
Sunday’s accident at East 7th St and Marne Rd draws attention to the dangers posed when traffic control devices like stop signs are disregarded. In this case, a teenage driver suffered injuries because another motorist failed to obey a posted stop—an action that continues to be one of the most common causes of intersection crashes in urban areas.
For teens behind the wheel, intersection collisions are particularly dangerous. Their relative inexperience and lower reaction times can leave them vulnerable even when they are not at fault. Although the teen in this crash appears to have been following proper right-of-way rules, the outcome still involved physical harm and an emergency response.
Injuries to the hand or extremities are common in side-impact crashes, particularly when airbags deploy or when a driver’s hands remain on the steering wheel during impact. Even seemingly minor injuries can lead to lasting discomfort, rehabilitation, or missed school and activity time—especially for young drivers.
In Erie and similar cities, urban intersections demand increased attentiveness. Road layouts, parked cars, and inconsistent signage can all contribute to dangerous outcomes when drivers fail to yield. For families of teen drivers, education on defensive driving and monitoring high-risk intersections can play a role in reducing future risks.
