Multi-Vehicle Crash Risks in Urban Traffic
Busy corridors like 13th Ave S see high volumes of commuter and commercial traffic, making them susceptible to chain-reaction crashes during periods of congestion. Multi-vehicle collisions often begin with a single rear-end impact that causes a ripple effect among closely spaced vehicles.
According to North Dakota traffic safety data, common contributing factors in multi-car pileups include following too closely, distracted driving, and sudden changes in traffic speed. These incidents are more likely to occur near intersections, shopping centers, and highway on-ramps where merging traffic adds complexity.
Drivers can help reduce the risk of multi-vehicle crashes by maintaining greater following distances, avoiding distractions, and anticipating sudden stops in heavy traffic. Roadway improvements such as adaptive traffic signal systems and better lane markings may also help reduce collision rates in high-traffic urban corridors.
