Findlay, OH (February 2, 2025) – A multi-vehicle crash at the northbound exit ramp of I-75 in Findlay claimed the life of one person and left another seriously injured on Thursday night.
Findlay police responded to the scene just after 9:30 p.m. at West Trenton Avenue, where two vehicles were stopped at a red light. According to officials, a vehicle exiting I-75 at a high rate of speed lost control and struck the front of one of the stopped vehicles before crashing into the driver’s side of the second. The impact forced both stopped cars under a guardrail.
The driver of the speeding vehicle, identified as 40-year-old Kalid Abdulaziz Abukar of Lansing, MI, suffered serious injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Tragically, 45-year-old Clarance Bethel II of Fostoria, who was in the second struck vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the first impacted vehicle was evaluated by emergency responders but did not require hospitalization.
Authorities confirmed that the crash remains under investigation.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Clarance Bethel II, and we hope for the full recovery of those injured.
High-Speed Crashes in Ohio
Excessive speed is a leading factor in severe traffic accidents, particularly near highway exit ramps and intersections like the one at West Trenton Avenue and I-75. Vehicles traveling at high speeds require longer stopping distances, making it difficult for drivers to regain control in critical situations.
Multi-vehicle crashes at stoplights can be especially dangerous, as stationary cars have no way to evade an oncoming collision. These crashes often lead to significant injuries, vehicle entrapment, and, in tragic cases, loss of life.
Drivers exiting highways should always reduce speed well in advance and remain alert for stopped traffic. Proper roadway design, warning signs, and increased enforcement in high-risk areas can also help prevent accidents.
