Flagler County, FL (September 23, 2025) – A 71-year-old woman from South Daytona was killed in a head-on collision Saturday morning along State Road 11 in southwest Flagler County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 10:20 a.m. on September 20. Authorities say the woman was driving an SUV northbound on SR-11 when her vehicle veered out of its lane and crossed into southbound traffic. Her SUV collided head-on with a second SUV driven by a 61-year-old man from Saint Johns, Florida.
The impact of the crash was severe enough to block both directions of the highway. The South Daytona woman, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the second SUV sustained only minor injuries and did not require hospitalization.
Traffic in the area was affected for several hours as troopers conducted their on-scene investigation and cleared the roadway. FHP is continuing to examine the crash to determine why the vehicle left its lane and whether other factors, such as distraction or a medical event, may have played a role.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the woman who lost her life in this tragic incident.
Understanding Head-On Collisions in Florida
Head-on collisions, such as the fatal crash reported on SR-11, are among the most deadly types of vehicle accidents. They often occur suddenly, with little time for either driver to react. According to data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, lane-departure crashes—especially those involving wrong-way entry or crossing the center line—lead to a disproportionate number of fatalities each year.
The absence of seatbelt use in this incident underscores a continued concern for driver safety, particularly among older adults. Seatbelts remain one of the most effective ways to prevent fatal injuries during high-impact crashes. In Florida, not wearing a seatbelt can significantly increase the likelihood of death or serious injury in the event of a head-on collision.
SR-11 is a two-lane highway that runs through rural sections of Flagler County, where passing zones are limited and traffic speeds are often high. When a vehicle unintentionally crosses into opposing lanes, there’s often no median or barrier to prevent a direct collision.
For the surviving driver and those affected by the incident, the aftermath of such a crash can involve emotional trauma, legal inquiries, and lingering physical effects. Fatal crashes also leave families grappling with sudden loss, financial burdens, and unanswered questions.
