Fort Myers, FL (January 27, 2025) – A tragic crash occurred Sunday morning along US-41, just south of Alico Rd, resulting in at least one confirmed fatality. The incident took place at approximately 8:10 a.m. when a sedan traveling northbound veered off the roadway, entered a ditch, and struck a natural gas line.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the impact caused a natural gas line to erupt roughly 15 seconds after the initial collision. The sedan became engulfed in flames, with the fire burning for over two hours until TECO crews were able to shut off the gas supply, allowing firefighters to extinguish the blaze. Witness video captured the intense scene as emergency personnel, including San Carlos Park Fire and Lee County EMS crews, worked to contain the fire and assist at the site.
Preliminary reports indicate that two people were pronounced dead inside the vehicle based on fire and EMS radio communications. However, FHP has officially confirmed only one fatality at this time. Authorities are also investigating the possibility of a third victim in the back seat, though no additional fatalities have been confirmed.
The FHP is coordinating with the Lee County Medical Examiner to identify the deceased and determine if there were other victims. All northbound lanes of US-41 at Michael G. Rippe Pkwy remain closed as the investigation continues.
