Winning Trials since 1979

Fort Pierce, FL (August 15, 2025) – A devastating crash on Florida’s Turnpike claimed the lives of three individuals Tuesday when a semi-truck and a passenger van collided near mile marker 171. The incident occurred in St. Lucie County, just south of Fort Pierce, and prompted an intensive emergency response.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the semi-truck was traveling northbound in the outside lane and attempted to make a U-turn at an “Official Use Only” turnaround point. In doing so, the truck crossed all northbound lanes directly in the path of an oncoming Chrysler Town & Country minivan traveling in the inside lane.

The driver of the Chrysler was unable to avoid the crossing semi, resulting in a violent collision that wedged the minivan beneath the trailer. Tragically, two passengers in the Chrysler were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the minivan was airlifted to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The semi-truck driver and their passenger were not injured.

Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash, including the decision to use the restricted turnaround, which is typically reserved for law enforcement and maintenance vehicles. It remains unclear whether charges will be filed.

Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this heartbreaking accident.

Turnpike U-Turns and Deadly Truck Collisions in Florida

Turnpike collisions involving commercial vehicles are among the most dangerous on Florida roads—especially when they involve sudden maneuvers across multiple lanes of high-speed traffic. The use of “Official Use Only” U-turn crossovers, like the one near mile marker 171, is heavily regulated for good reason. Unauthorized or poorly timed use of these access points can result in catastrophic outcomes, as seen in this Fort Pierce crash.

Passenger vehicles such as the Chrysler Town & Country are particularly vulnerable when colliding with large trucks due to the risk of underride—a scenario in which the smaller vehicle is pushed beneath the trailer of a truck. These accidents often cause fatal injuries on impact, especially to rear or side-seated passengers.

Florida drivers should remain cautious near turnpike U-turn zones and always be alert for unexpected maneuvers from large vehicles. For commercial drivers, adherence to U-turn restrictions and heightened awareness of lane conditions are essential to preventing tragedies like this.
