Frankenmuth, MI (August 12, 2025) – Emergency crews from Saginaw County responded on Monday afternoon after a serious three-car collision left four people hospitalized along S Gera Rd between Lange and Busch.

First responders, including local paramedics and sheriff’s deputies, were dispatched to the scene around 3:30 p.m. following reports of a major crash involving multiple vehicles and injuries. Authorities say the incident unfolded when southbound traffic on S Gera Rd was stopped to allow a vehicle to turn into a private driveway. According to the initial investigation, a 22-year-old Taymouth Township man driving a blue Chevrolet Malibu attempted to pass the line of stopped vehicles by using the shoulder of the road.

While maneuvering around the stopped traffic, the Malibu driver reportedly lost control and crashed into a stationary Chevrolet Traverse. The impact forced the Traverse off the road and into at least one nearby mailbox before the Malibu continued forward and struck a third vehicle, a Buick Enclave driven by a 31-year-old woman from Mt. Morris.

The occupants of the Traverse, a 79-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman from Clio, sustained the most serious injuries. The woman, who was riding as a passenger, suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Hurley Medical Center. Her husband was taken in for precautionary medical evaluation. Both the Malibu and Enclave drivers were transported to Covenant HealthCare for precautionary care following the collision.

Saginaw County deputies confirmed the crash remains under active investigation as they work to determine contributing factors and potential charges. Additional updates on the victims’ conditions and the cause of the crash are expected in the coming days. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this serious incident, and we wish each individual a full and swift recovery.

Multi-Vehicle Collisions in Michigan

Accidents like the one on S Gera Rd highlight the significant dangers posed by aggressive or impatient driving behavior, especially in high-traffic areas near residential or rural driveways. In this case, investigators believe that the decision to use the road shoulder to bypass stopped traffic led directly to the chain-reaction collision that hospitalized four people and left one woman in critical condition.

Multi-vehicle crashes are often complex incidents involving a combination of vehicle positioning, driver decision-making, and road conditions. Michigan law prohibits using the road shoulder to pass, and this crash shows why: even a brief miscalculation can result in devastating consequences for multiple families. It also illustrates the importance of caution and patience when traffic is stopped, particularly near intersections or private driveways.

Saginaw County has seen a concerning number of multi-vehicle incidents in recent years, with rural corridors like S Gera Rd often experiencing dangerous collisions involving passing maneuvers gone wrong. Local officials continue to urge drivers to observe all traffic laws and remain alert to changes in road behavior, particularly when other vehicles are stopped or turning.

For those impacted, the recovery process can be long and emotionally taxing, especially when life-threatening injuries are involved. Accessing appropriate medical care, navigating insurance claims, and understanding one’s legal rights are all essential steps after a crash. Family members of the injured may also face emotional and financial burdens as they support their loved ones during the healing process.

Local safety advocates encourage ongoing education campaigns focused on reducing shoulder usage and promoting safe passing strategies, especially in regions where long rural roads may tempt drivers into risky decisions. For communities like Clio and Mt. Morris, incidents like this resonate deeply, underscoring how quickly everyday travel can turn tragic.
