Franklin County, MO (August 12, 2025) – A three-vehicle crash on eastbound I-44 near the 257-mile marker left a 72-year-old Sullivan woman injured on Sunday afternoon. The collision occurred at approximately 1:50 p.m. as traffic slowed for a separate crash ahead. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the front of a 2020 Freightliner Cascadia struck the rear of a 2019 Toyota Tacoma, causing the truck’s towed unit to slide and strike a 2019 Chevrolet Trax.
The driver of the Trax sustained minor injuries and was transported by Meramec Ambulance District to Mercy Hospital, St. Louis. The drivers of the Freightliner and Tacoma were not hurt and were able to drive their vehicles from the scene. The Chevrolet sustained total damage and was towed from the area by Big Boys Towing.
Our thoughts are with the injured driver, and we hope for her full recovery.
Chain-Reaction Crashes in Missouri
Multi-vehicle collisions like Sunday’s on I-44 are often the result of sudden slowdowns, which can trigger a chain reaction when following distances are insufficient. In this incident, the initial rear-end impact between the Freightliner and the Tacoma led to a secondary collision involving the Chevrolet Trax, resulting in injury.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation data, chain-reaction crashes are more common on high-speed roadways where traffic can shift from free-flowing to stopped in a matter of seconds. Large commercial vehicles, such as the Freightliner involved here, require more distance to stop safely, making it critical for truck drivers to maintain extended following gaps.
Local Accident Reports urges all drivers to stay alert to changing traffic conditions, leave ample space between vehicles, and reduce speed when approaching congestion.
