Cherokee County, AL (September 1, 2025) – A tragic ATV crash at Indian Mountain ATV Park claimed the lives of two parents and left seven children injured on Saturday, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office. The accident happened in a remote area of the park, making emergency response efforts especially challenging.
Authorities reported that the crash involved a side-by-side RZR carrying nine people. The vehicle struck another RZR, overturned, and collided with a tree. The driver, identified by family as 34-year-old Marcus Ragland, was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger, Ashley Hawkins, later succumbed to her injuries after being airlifted to a Birmingham trauma center.
Three children were flown by helicopter to Birmingham-area hospitals for advanced care, while four others were transported to Atrium-Floyd Medical Center in Rome. Several of the victims have since been released from the hospital, though their recovery journeys continue.
Family members shared that six of Ragland’s children were in the ATV at the time of the crash, including his 5-year-old and 1-year-old. Loved ones are now grappling with the devastating loss of both parents, while also tending to the emotional and physical healing of the children.
Ragland’s mother, Felecia Towers, described her son as adventurous and someone who lived life fully, noting that he frequently visited the ATV park on weekends. Hawkins and Ragland are survived by their children, and the family has launched a GoFundMe to support the young ones affected by this tragedy.
Our deepest sympathies go out to the families impacted by this heartbreaking incident.
ATV Accidents in Alabama
The deadly crash at Indian Mountain ATV Park underscores the risks associated with recreational off-road vehicles, particularly when carrying multiple passengers. Side-by-side ATVs like the RZR are popular in Alabama for their ability to handle rough terrain, but they are not designed to safely accommodate large groups. Overloading, combined with high speeds and challenging landscapes, significantly increases the chance of rollovers and serious injuries.
In Alabama, ATV-related crashes are a persistent safety concern, especially in rural and recreational areas where off-road use is common. According to state data, children are often among the most vulnerable in these incidents, with many suffering severe injuries due to limited protective restraints and exposure during rollovers.
Safety advocates emphasize the importance of using helmets and protective gear, limiting passengers to manufacturer guidelines, and avoiding excessive speeds, particularly on rough or wooded trails. Even in organized ATV parks, remote locations can complicate rescue efforts, delaying critical medical care in serious accidents like this one.
