Franklin County, FL (August 11, 2025) – A deadly two-vehicle collision Monday morning on the John Gorrie Bridge between Eastpoint and Apalachicola claimed the life of one driver and left another with serious injuries. The crash occurred on U.S. Highway 98 when a pickup truck traveling west crossed into the opposite lane and collided head-on with an eastbound sedan.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the 71-year-old pickup driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The 64-year-old woman driving the sedan sustained serious injuries and was transported for medical care.
Both lanes of the bridge were closed following the crash, causing significant traffic delays in the area. Local authorities advised drivers to avoid the bridge while first responders worked to clear the scene and reopen the roadway. Agencies assisting at the scene included the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Franklin County EMS, and the Florida Highway Patrol.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the man who lost his life and wish the injured woman a full and swift recovery.
Head-On Collisions in Florida
Head-on crashes are among the most dangerous types of vehicle accidents due to the combined speed and force of impact. They often result in severe or fatal injuries, particularly when they occur on narrow or elevated roadways like bridges, where there is limited space for evasive action. Monday’s crash on the John Gorrie Bridge highlights how a single lane departure can have devastating consequences.
Florida traffic safety data shows that lane departure crashes are frequently linked to factors such as distraction, impairment, fatigue, or sudden medical emergencies. Safety officials encourage drivers to stay alert, avoid distractions, and maintain proper lane position, especially on two-lane roadways and bridges.
