Franklin County, WA (August 27, 2025) – A tragic crash near Pasco on Sunday, August 24, claimed the life of 76-year-old Mark Wallum of Vancouver, WA, following a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of US 395 and Crestloch Road, according to the Washington State Patrol.
The fatal incident occurred when a 2025 Chevrolet Trax, traveling southbound on US 395, attempted a left turn onto Crestloch Road. As it crossed the northbound lanes, it was struck by an oncoming 2003 Toyota RAV4. The impact resulted in catastrophic damage to both vehicles.
Wallum, a passenger in the Chevrolet Trax, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Trax—a 73-year-old woman from Vancouver—along with another passenger, an 18-year-old also from Vancouver, were transported to a local hospital with injuries.
The 48-year-old male driver of the Toyota RAV4, a resident of Deer Park, was also hospitalized. His condition has not been publicly released.
Authorities confirmed that all individuals involved were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. No drugs or alcohol are believed to have played a role in the incident.
The Washington State Patrol continues to investigate the collision. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mark Wallum and offer our best wishes to the others recovering from this heartbreaking event.
Left-Turn Collisions and Fatalities on Washington Highways
Intersections along high-speed corridors like US 395 in Franklin County present significant risks—especially when drivers attempt left-hand turns across oncoming traffic. Sunday’s tragic crash is a stark reminder of the life-and-death consequences these moments can carry.
In this case, the Chevrolet Trax was turning left onto Crestloch Road when it crossed the northbound lanes and was struck by an approaching Toyota RAV4. Even though all occupants were wearing seat belts—a factor that likely saved other lives—one passenger was killed, and others were injured.
Rural intersections without signal controls require drivers to judge gaps in fast-moving traffic, often under pressure. Misjudging the speed or distance of oncoming vehicles can result in T-bone or angle-impact crashes, which are among the most dangerous due to their violent force and limited protection for passengers on the struck side.
This crash also highlights the importance of safe turn practices and infrastructure improvements in rural communities. While drugs or alcohol were not contributing factors, the need for improved visibility, better signage, or even protected turn lanes could reduce the risk of similar tragedies.
