Franklin, MO (April 23, 2025) – Emergency responders were called to a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and a sedan Tuesday afternoon on Route K near Meramec View Estates in Franklin County. The incident, which occurred at approximately 3:41 p.m., resulted in injuries for one motorcyclist and disrupted traffic for a brief period as authorities worked to clear the scene.
According to reports from Trooper W. Givens, both vehicles were traveling south on Route K when the 2014 Volkswagen Passat, driven by a 50-year-old woman from St. Clair, MO, began to slow in preparation for a left-hand turn. The second vehicle, a 2011 Harley Davidson Glide Standard operated by a 61-year-old man from Sullivan, MO, failed to reduce speed and collided with the rear of the sedan.
Although both vehicles sustained only minor damage and were able to be driven from the scene, the motorcyclist suffered injuries. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. Following the incident, the injured man sought treatment via private transportation.
While the motorcyclist was the only individual injured, the incident underscores the risks associated with rear-end collisions and the heightened vulnerability of motorcycle riders. The Missouri State Highway Patrol continues to review the details of the crash as part of its ongoing investigation.
We extend our well wishes to the injured motorcyclist and hope for a swift and full recovery.
Motorcycle Accidents in Missouri
Motorcycle collisions, even at low speeds, often result in injuries due to the lack of protective barriers for riders. Tuesday’s crash on Route K highlights the unique risks motorcyclists face, particularly when following vehicles that may suddenly slow or turn. In this case, the failure to maintain an adequate following distance appears to have played a critical role in the collision.
Missouri is home to thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts, with winding rural roads like Route K offering scenic but potentially hazardous riding conditions. According to data from the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety, approximately 1 in 5 motorcycle crashes result from rear-end collisions, frequently occurring in areas where turning vehicles are common.
The fact that the injured rider was not wearing a helmet raises additional concerns. While Missouri law allows adult riders over age 26 to ride without a helmet if they meet specific insurance criteria, helmet use is still strongly recommended by safety experts. Studies consistently show that helmets significantly reduce the risk of traumatic brain injury and death in motorcycle accidents.
This crash also sheds light on the importance of driver awareness. Motorists following motorcycles must maintain greater stopping distances, especially when approaching residential or mixed-use zones like Meramec View Estates where turning vehicles are frequent. Likewise, motorcyclists must remain vigilant and anticipate potential slowdowns ahead to prevent rear-end crashes.
In the aftermath of any motorcycle accident, injured riders often face complex medical, legal, and financial challenges. Whether navigating personal insurance claims or pursuing recovery options, having accurate information and timely support can make all the difference.
