Fremont, NH (May 19, 2025) – A 26-year-old Manchester man was critically injured Sunday afternoon in a dirt bike crash on the Rockingham Recreation Trail in Fremont. Authorities say the rider, identified as Matthew O’Rourke, lost control of his bike shortly before 1:00 p.m., veered off the trail, and struck a tree.
According to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, O’Rourke was ejected from the bike during the crash and sustained potentially life-threatening injuries. Witnesses at the scene indicated that speed may have been a contributing factor. It is currently unclear whether O’Rourke was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Emergency response was swift, with first responders from Fremont, Raymond, and Plaistow providing medical aid on-site. Brentwood Fire Department established a landing zone behind Ellis Elementary School to accommodate Boston MedFlight, which airlifted the injured man to a Boston trauma center for further treatment.
As of this report, O’Rourke’s condition has not been updated. The incident remains under investigation by conservation officers and local authorities.
Our thoughts are with Matthew O’Rourke and his loved ones as he undergoes treatment and recovery.
Off-Road Riding Dangers and Safety in New Hampshire
The Rockingham Recreation Trail, like many popular multi-use off-road paths in New Hampshire, attracts outdoor enthusiasts for dirt biking, cycling, and hiking. However, these trails also carry risks—especially for high-speed motorized recreation. Dirt bike riders navigating narrow, wooded trails are particularly vulnerable to loss of control, especially when riding alone or without protective gear.
Crashes involving trees and other fixed objects often result in traumatic injuries. In this case, the need for a MedFlight evacuation suggests that O’Rourke’s injuries were severe, requiring advanced medical intervention that local facilities could not provide immediately.
Helmet use remains one of the most critical safety measures in preventing serious brain trauma during off-road motorcycle crashes. While it has not been confirmed whether O’Rourke was wearing one, the uncertainty underscores the importance of consistent safety practices, even for experienced riders.
This incident also demonstrates the value of coordinated emergency response in rural areas. The involvement of multiple departments and the swift deployment of air medical transport were vital in ensuring O’Rourke received the care he needed without delay.
