Gadsden County, FL – Four-Vehicle Crash on I-10 Involving FHP Patrol Car Leaves Two Injured

August 20, 2025

Gadsden County, FL (August 20, 2025) – A serious multi-vehicle crash involving a Florida Highway Patrol vehicle occurred Tuesday night on Interstate 10 westbound near mile marker 167, resulting in two people being injured, according to an FHP press release issued Wednesday.

The crash took place around 9:26 p.m. as troopers were actively investigating a separate earlier accident. A patrol car was parked on the north shoulder of the highway, facing west, while Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Road Rangers and Webber incident response crews had closed the second westbound lane using traffic cones.

The chain of events began when a 53-year-old man from Orange Park, driving a white Subaru, began merging into the inside lane near the crash scene. At the same time, a 25-year-old Texas man driving a black pickup truck towing a 28-foot enclosed trailer was already in that lane and began following the Subaru “more closely than reasonable,” according to FHP. This resulted in the front of the pickup colliding with the rear of the Subaru.

The impact caused the Subaru to slam head-on into the concrete barrier in the median. Moments later, a white Ford F-350 pulling a 50-foot car hauler trailer carrying three vehicles struck the trailer being towed by the black pickup. The collision’s force also redirected the Subaru into the rear of the parked Florida Highway Patrol vehicle.

The Subaru carried multiple occupants. A 51-year-old woman and an 18-year-old teenager, both passengers in the vehicle, were reported to have sustained minor injuries. EMS crews transported both to Gadsden ER for further evaluation. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported among the involved parties.

The parked FHP patrol car sustained only minor cosmetic damage, and troopers on the scene were not hurt.

Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we hope for a smooth and full recovery.

Multi-Vehicle Accidents on Florida Highways

Highway crashes involving multiple vehicles—especially near active crash investigations—are dangerous and unpredictable. Tuesday night’s collision on I-10 in Gadsden County is a prime example of how a moment of inattention or following too closely can escalate quickly, impacting not just the involved drivers, but also emergency crews and responders already on site.

Interstate 10 is a major corridor for both passenger and commercial vehicles in Florida, and the presence of a previous crash scene already posed a safety risk. FDOT Road Rangers and Webber response units were actively managing the area when the four-vehicle pileup occurred, highlighting the importance of driver awareness and compliance with move-over laws during active roadway incidents.

This particular collision involved a combination of passenger cars and large commercial-style vehicles—including a pickup hauling a large trailer and a Ford F-350 with a 50-foot car hauler. When high-mass vehicles collide, the results can be catastrophic, particularly for smaller passenger vehicles caught in the impact.

Fortunately, the two injured Subaru passengers—a woman and a teen—suffered only minor injuries, but the outcome could have been far worse given the force involved. The fact that a stationary law enforcement vehicle was struck further emphasizes the dangers first responders face every day when managing active crash scenes.

Drivers are reminded to maintain safe following distances, reduce speed near incident zones, and change lanes if possible to give room to responders. Florida’s Move Over Law requires drivers to vacate the lane closest to stopped emergency vehicles or reduce their speed by 20 mph below the posted limit if changing lanes is unsafe.

For victims of multi-vehicle crashes, recovery can be layered—medical needs, insurance claims, and emotional trauma often pile up fast. Knowing your rights and getting appropriate support early can make a vital difference.
