Gainesville, FL (June 16, 2025) – A fatal hit-and-run crash occurred early Sunday morning near the I-75 exit at Williston Road, claiming the life of a pedestrian. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is actively searching for the driver of a black semi-truck who fled the scene following the deadly collision.
According to FHP, the crash took place near an exit ramp from southbound I-75 at approximately 8:55 a.m. on June 15. Witnesses reported seeing the right side of a semi-truck with a black cab and white trailer strike a pedestrian walking near the ramp area. The driver did not stop and continued driving southbound on the interstate.
The pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not publicly identified the victim, pending notification of family.
Troopers and local law enforcement are asking the public for assistance in identifying the truck and its driver. Anyone with information is urged to contact Florida Highway Patrol or Crime Stoppers.
Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.
The Danger of Highway Pedestrian Collisions and the Tragedy of Hit-and-Runs
Pedestrian fatalities on Florida’s highways are a sobering and all-too-common occurrence. Interstate zones like I-75 near Gainesville are designed for high-speed travel, not pedestrian access. However, individuals may be present on foot due to vehicle breakdowns, homelessness, or other emergencies—placing them in extremely vulnerable situations.
Crashes involving semi-trucks are particularly devastating. These vehicles have larger blind spots, longer stopping distances, and greater impact force. When drivers fail to remain at the scene—especially after striking a pedestrian—the chances of survival for the victim decrease dramatically, and families are left without answers or closure.
Hit-and-run collisions are a felony offense under Florida law, and law enforcement agencies work diligently to track down those responsible. Camera footage, vehicle paint analysis, and witness tips often play a critical role in identifying suspects.
For grieving families, the emotional and legal aftermath of such incidents can be overwhelming. They may be left with funeral costs, unanswered questions, and the painful reality of a preventable loss.
