Gastonia, NC (August 16, 2025) – A two-vehicle crash on the northbound side of Interstate 85 near Exit 17 resulted in injuries Friday morning and prompted a multi-unit emergency response from Gastonia Fire and Rescue. The crash was reported at approximately 8:47 a.m.
According to dispatch audio, the collision occurred near the Chester Street off-ramp (Exit 17 Northbound), a heavily trafficked area in Gastonia. Rescue 1, Engine 2, Ladder 1, and Engine 6 were all initially dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, crews confirmed that two vehicles were involved and that at least one individual was injured.
Command was established at the scene, and responders also noted water damage in the immediate area—though it is unclear whether it was caused by a ruptured vehicle system or runoff from firefighting or rescue equipment. After a brief response, Engines 2 and 6 were cleared from the scene, indicating that the situation was contained and injuries were managed by remaining units.
No information has yet been released regarding the identities of those involved or the specific nature of the injuries. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
We extend our best wishes to the injured and hope for a full recovery.
Highway Crash Risks in North Carolina
Accidents like the one on I-85 near Exit 17 are common across North Carolina’s major interstates, especially in growing metro areas like Gastonia. I-85 is a critical corridor for commuters and freight traffic, and areas near exits—like Chester Street—are especially vulnerable to crashes due to merging, lane changes, and sudden braking.
Two-vehicle collisions on highways can lead to a variety of injuries, including whiplash, head trauma, and chest or abdominal injuries from seat belt force. When vehicles are damaged near the engine block or fuel systems, fluid leaks or ruptured lines can result in additional hazards like water or coolant damage, which responders must assess and mitigate.
Morning crashes, such as this one, also pose unique risks due to increased traffic flow, sun glare, and driver fatigue during early commutes.
In the aftermath of a crash, it’s essential for those injured to seek prompt medical care—even if symptoms seem mild at first. Proper documentation and support can help victims recover both physically and financially.
