Georgetown County, SC (September 1, 2025) – A tragic multi-vehicle accident on the evening of August 29 claimed the life of a motorcyclist on US Highway 17 near Pawleys Island. The crash, which occurred shortly before 7:45 p.m., involved three vehicles and led to a heavy emergency response in the area.
According to Master Trooper Brandon Bolt of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a 2020 Ford SUV struck a 2024 Honda motorcycle traveling along US-17. The force of the collision caused the Ford to then crash into a 2024 Kia hatchback that was stopped at a red light on Petigru Dr.
The motorcyclist sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Sadly, they later succumbed to those injuries. Officials confirmed that neither the driver of the Ford nor the driver of the Kia was injured in the incident.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash and determine if any charges will be filed.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the motorcyclist during this incredibly difficult time.
Fatal Motorcycle Crashes in South Carolina
Motorcycle accidents often result in devastating consequences, especially when they occur on major roadways like US Highway 17. Unlike those in enclosed vehicles, motorcyclists are far more vulnerable to severe injury in collisions, particularly when larger vehicles like SUVs are involved. In this tragic case near Pawleys Island, the impact proved fatal despite medical efforts.
South Carolina has seen a troubling pattern of motorcycle fatalities in recent years, with riders often facing the brunt of harm even in multi-vehicle scenarios. Highways like US-17, with fast-moving traffic and high congestion, are especially dangerous for motorcyclists due to reduced visibility, limited maneuvering space, and abrupt traffic pattern changes near intersections like Petigru Dr.
Even the safest and most experienced riders cannot always avoid collisions when drivers fail to yield, make sudden moves, or engage in distracted driving. That’s why education and awareness campaigns continue to emphasize motorcycle visibility, safe lane changes, and extra caution at intersections.
For families left grieving after such losses, the aftermath often includes not only emotional devastation but also complex legal, financial, and investigative matters. Understanding what happened, seeking justice where appropriate, and receiving support through the healing process are essential.
