Georgetown, DE (September 16, 2025) – A woman from New York tragically lost her life in a two-vehicle collision involving a Nissan Altima and a tractor-trailer on Monday afternoon in Sussex County. The crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Dupont Boulevard (US 113) and Redden Road, just outside Georgetown.
According to the Delaware State Police, the Nissan Altima was traveling southbound on US 113 when a Mack Anthem truck hauling an empty grain trailer attempted to make a left turn from the northbound side of the highway onto Redden Road. The truck reportedly failed to yield at the posted sign, crossing into the path of the southbound Nissan. The Altima struck the right side of the trailer.
The impact caused significant damage and heavy entrapment. Despite wearing a seatbelt, the 49-year-old woman driving the Altima was pronounced deceased at the scene. She was later identified as a resident of the Bronx, NY, though her name has not been released pending family notification.
Emergency crews from Ellendale Fire Company, Sussex County Medics, and Delaware State Police responded to the scene, along with Trooper 2 aviation and the Sussex County Technical Rescue Team. However, both the helicopter and technical rescue were ultimately not needed.
The 76-year-old truck driver, a man from Cambridge, Maryland, was not injured in the collision. Both drivers were reportedly wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Dupont Boulevard remained closed for approximately three and a half hours while the Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit conducted its investigation and cleared the scene.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the woman who lost her life in this devastating crash.
Fatal Tractor-Trailer Crashes in Sussex County
Collisions involving passenger vehicles and commercial trucks—particularly when turn maneuvers are involved—frequently result in devastating consequences. Monday’s fatal crash at the intersection of US 113 and Redden Road is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by misjudged left turns and failures to yield.
Heavy trucks such as the Mack Anthem, especially when towing trailers, have large blind spots and extended turning distances. Even at slower speeds, a miscalculated maneuver can block an entire lane, leaving smaller vehicles with little time to react. The woman driving the Nissan had no apparent opportunity to avoid the crash when the truck crossed into her path.
Sussex County’s rural and highway intersections are especially vulnerable to this type of incident due to high-speed travel and limited traffic control beyond signage. Intersections like Redden Road and Dupont Boulevard require careful coordination between through traffic and turning vehicles—something that becomes even more critical when large commercial trucks are involved.
Crashes like this often leave families reeling with grief, unanswered questions, and the financial and emotional burden of sudden loss. While investigations aim to bring clarity, they can’t undo the harm done.
