Car Accidents in Newnan, GA: Crash Data and Road Safety

Key crash statistics, high-risk roads, and accident report resources in Coweta County, Georgia.

Last updated October 2026
Newnan, the county seat of Coweta County, sits about 35 miles southwest of Atlanta and has grown to a population of nearly 46,000. The city is crisscrossed by major routes, with Interstate 85 running along its eastern edge and carrying a steady stream of cars and trucks between Atlanta, LaGrange, and Montgomery.

Bullsboro Drive, also known as State Route 34, brings drivers west from the interstate toward the historic courthouse square, while Poplar Road takes you out to Piedmont Newnan Hospital. The area is also known for its distribution centers and manufacturing plants, so it is common to see plenty of trucks sharing the road with local traffic. In 2025, police noticed more pedestrians being struck by vehicles, a troubling pattern that has put extra focus on road safety.

If an accident happens inside the city limits, the Newnan Police Department is usually in charge, but wrecks on I-85 or out in unincorporated areas are handled by state troopers or another agency, which can change where you need to go to get a copy of the crash report.

What to Do After a Crash on a Newnan Street

The Newnan Police Department’s Traffic Unit investigates crashes inside the city, including serious-injury and fatal crashes. The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office covers unincorporated Coweta, which includes some addresses with a Newnan mailing address. The Georgia State Patrol also works crashes in Coweta County from its Newnan post at 517 Turkey Creek Road.

Newnan police reports are usually ready in three to five business days. To get one, contact the Municipal Court Clerk’s Office at 770-253-1226. A copy costs $5, and a person named in the report gets the first copy free with valid government ID. Georgia law requires a signed Statement of Need form, which the city posts online, stating how you are connected to the crash.

For a crash the State Patrol worked, ask the Newnan post or the Georgia Department of Public Safety’s Open Records Unit at 404-624-7591.

Georgia law, O.C.G.A. 40-6-273, requires the driver in any crash with injury, death, or apparent damage of $500 or more to notify police immediately.
