Gila River Indian Reservation, AZ (May 24, 2025) – A fatal head-on collision on State Route 87 near Sacaton on Friday evening resulted in the closure of the highway for several hours. The crash occurred near the Gilbert Road intersection at approximately 3:20 PM.
Gila River police confirmed that the crash involved a motorcycle, and at least one person was killed. Details regarding other potential injuries have not yet been released. Aerial footage from the scene showed a sedan with extensive front-end damage, suggesting a severe collision.
As a result of the crash, the southbound lanes of SR 87 were closed near San Tan Day School Road (milepost 154), while the northbound lanes were closed near Olberg Road. Traffic was diverted onto Stotonic and Lower San Tan roads before being allowed back onto SR 87. The roadways remained closed until 9:30 PM, when traffic returned to normal.
