Gilchrist County, FL (September 23, 2025) – A Fort White man was killed Monday evening in a two-vehicle crash along US-129, according to a statement from the Florida Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred around 5:00 p.m. just south of Northwest 117th Place. Troopers reported that one vehicle was traveling south on US-129 when its driver veered onto the shoulder and attempted to execute a U-turn. As the vehicle re-entered the roadway, it was struck on the side by another southbound car.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the driver who initiated the U-turn died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. His identity has not been publicly released pending notification of family.
The second driver, a 32-year-old man from Bell, was not injured and remained at the scene to cooperate with authorities. No charges or citations have been reported as of now.
Troopers with FHP continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash, including road conditions, visibility, and any contributing factors that may have played a role in the fatal maneuver.
Our condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time.
Understanding U-Turn Collisions in Florida
Fatal accidents involving U-turns, such as Monday’s crash in Gilchrist County, highlight the significant risks associated with making sudden or poorly timed turning maneuvers on high-speed roads like US-129. Although legal in many situations, U-turns can be deadly if not executed with clear visibility and sufficient time to gauge oncoming traffic.
Florida law allows U-turns where they do not interfere with other vehicles, but such maneuvers can quickly become dangerous on highways with fast-moving traffic and limited shoulder space. Drivers may misjudge the speed of approaching vehicles or find their view obstructed—both of which can lead to side-impact collisions, which are often fatal.
In this case, the vehicle reentering traffic from the shoulder was struck on the side—a common scenario in U-turn-related crashes. Side-impact collisions, particularly on the driver’s side, offer little structural protection and often result in severe or fatal injuries.
For surviving family members, the aftermath of a fatal crash brings both emotional trauma and practical challenges, such as funeral expenses, legal paperwork, and potential investigations. Support from local resources, counseling services, and legal professionals can help families process their grief and understand their options.
