Glasscock County, TX (April 7, 2025) – Medics and fire crews worked to assist those suffering from injuries after the collision that occurred Sunday in Glasscock County, leaving two individuals dead and one injured. The crash took place at the intersection of Farm-to-Market Rd 33 and Hillger Rd, involving a Chevrolet pickup and an SUV.
According to a report from Sergeant Steven Blanco with the Texas Department of Public Safety, a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling eastbound on Hillger Rd when it stopped at the stop sign at FM 33. As the driver of the Silverado attempted to turn north onto FM 33, the vehicle failed to yield the right of way and collided with a 2010 Ford Expedition traveling southbound.
The Ford Expedition, driven by 80-year-old John Duwain Cypert, was in the process of passing a northbound semi-truck when the crash occurred. He was airlifted to Medical Arts Hospital in Lamesa but sadly succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. His passenger, 78-year-old Josephine Linda Cypert, died at the scene from injuries sustained in the impact.
The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado was transported to the Medical Center Hospital in Odessa with injuries. Authorities confirmed that all parties involved were wearing seatbelts at the time of the incident.
The crash is currently under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety to determine the precise sequence of events and contributing factors.
Our thoughts are with the Cypert family and all those affected by this tragic loss.
Rural Intersection Crashes in Texas: Navigating Safety Risks on FM Roads
Crashes at rural intersections, such as the deadly collision on FM 33 and Hillger Rd, continue to highlight the dangers that drivers face on less-traveled but high-speed roads throughout Texas. These intersections often lack traffic signals and can be prone to right-of-way errors, especially when visibility is limited or larger vehicles obscure approaching traffic.
Farm-to-market roads like FM 33 play a vital role in connecting rural communities, but their two-lane structure and infrequent signage can create confusion or misjudgments during high-stress driving situations. According to data from the Texas Department of Transportation, intersection-related crashes account for a significant share of rural roadway fatalities statewide.
In incidents like this one, even compliance with seatbelt laws—as observed among all parties—may not be enough to prevent serious outcomes when right-of-way is not properly observed. Vehicles traveling at highway speeds can result in devastating forces, especially in side-impact or crossing collisions.
As investigations continue, safety officials often use these tragic events to reinforce the importance of defensive driving, checking for cross-traffic multiple times before entering intersections, and allowing ample time for turns, especially when visibility may be blocked by larger vehicles.
