Grand Island, NE (April 23, 2025) – A young motorcyclist was tragically killed in a crash Tuesday evening in Grand Island, according to the Grand Island Police Department (GIPD). The victim, 21-year-old Jose Mendoza, lost control of his motorcycle on south North Rd, just west of Stolley Park Rd, and collided with a power pole.
The fatal crash occurred shortly before 7:00 PM. GIPD Division Chief Dean Elliott reported that Mendoza was riding northbound with a group of other motorcyclists when he failed to navigate a curve, crossed into the opposite lane, and struck a utility pole. Despite wearing a helmet at the time, Mendoza sustained fatal injuries.
Authorities confirmed that neither speed, alcohol, nor drugs are suspected as contributing factors. The crash remains under investigation, but early findings suggest it was a loss-of-control incident—potentially due to roadway curvature or rider misjudgment.
South North Rd was closed for more than two hours while officers from GIPD, Grand Island Fire, the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, and the county attorney’s office responded and began their on-scene investigation.
