Hampton, VA (September 24, 2025) – A bicyclist sustained injuries after being struck on the Big Bethel Rd overpass above I-64 early Tuesday morning. The collision occurred near the intersection of Big Bethel Rd and Thomas Nelson Dr in District 11, prompting an urgent response from Hampton Fire and Rescue units just after 5:19 AM.
The victim was found lying in the roadway when emergency personnel arrived on scene. Multiple units, including Station 11 and Medic Support 2, responded to assess and stabilize the injured bicyclist. Immediate aid was provided before transport was arranged for further medical treatment. The bicyclist’s current condition has not yet been released, but authorities confirmed that the injuries sustained were serious enough to require hospital care.
The accident took place on the overpass section of Big Bethel Rd, a connector often used by early commuters and cyclists in the area. Given the pre-dawn timing of the incident, limited visibility may have played a role, though officials have not yet confirmed any contributing factors. Hampton Police are conducting a full investigation to determine the sequence of events and whether any citations or charges will follow.
The affected stretch of road was temporarily closed while crews tended to the scene and cleared the area for safe reopening. Morning traffic was diverted, and motorists were advised to use alternate routes through Mercury Blvd or Big Bethel Pl.
Our thoughts go out to the bicyclist injured in this tragic accident, and we hope for a swift recovery as they receive the care they need.
