Hand County, SD (August 29, 2025) – A tragic crash involving three motorcycles and a pickup truck left one rider dead and three others injured Wednesday morning east of Highmore. The collision occurred around 10:06 a.m. along US Highway 14 near 346th Avenue, approximately six miles east of town.
Preliminary reports from the South Dakota Highway Patrol indicate that three motorcycles were heading westbound on Highway 14 when a 2008 Chevrolet K1500 traveling eastbound crossed the center line into the wrong lane. The first motorcyclist managed to avoid the truck, but the second struck it head-on. A third rider swerved into the ditch to avoid impact, losing control and being separated from her motorcycle.
The second rider, a 77-year-old woman from Redfield, sustained fatal injuries. A 70-year-old woman from Tulare, operating a Can-Am Spyder, was injured but is expected to recover. The driver of the Chevrolet, a 45-year-old man from Huron, sustained minor injuries, while the first motorcyclist, a 78-year-old man, was unharmed.
Authorities confirmed that helmets were not used by the first two riders, though the third was wearing one. The driver of the Chevrolet was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate, noting that all details are preliminary.
Our thoughts go out to the family of the woman who lost her life, and we wish strength and healing to those recovering from this devastating crash.
Motorcycle Collisions in South Dakota
Wednesday’s fatal collision in Hand County underscores the dangers motorcyclists face on South Dakota highways. Rural routes like US Highway 14 are heavily used by both local drivers and long-distance travelers, combining higher speeds with limited shoulder space. These conditions leave little margin for error, especially when a vehicle crosses into oncoming lanes.
Motorcycle accidents in South Dakota frequently result in severe injuries or fatalities due to the lack of protection for riders. Data consistently shows that collisions involving motorcycles are more likely to be deadly compared to passenger vehicle crashes. The fact that two of the riders in this incident were not wearing helmets further illustrates how protective gear plays a critical role in survival.
Injury patterns from motorcycle crashes often include head trauma, fractures, and internal injuries, even at moderate speeds. Recovery can take months or years, and in many cases, victims live with long-term physical and emotional consequences. For families, the sudden loss of a loved one is especially devastating, leaving them to cope with grief and the financial burdens that follow.
Community advocates continue to emphasize safe riding practices, including helmet use, defensive driving, and awareness of high-risk situations like rural intersections and two-lane highways. For drivers of larger vehicles, maintaining full attention and respecting lane discipline are crucial to preventing catastrophic outcomes.
