Harrisonburg, VA (August 28, 2025) – A major multi-vehicle collision involving three tractor trailers and a passenger vehicle left one driver with life-threatening injuries early Wednesday morning on Interstate 81, according to local and state authorities.
The crash occurred around 1:00 a.m. on the northbound side of I-81 near mile marker 244.1, prompting a large-scale response from the Harrisonburg Fire Department, Harrisonburg Rescue Squad, Virginia State Police (VSP), and emergency air medical services. Multiple lanes of the interstate were shut down as responders worked to manage the wreckage and care for the injured.
Upon arrival, emergency crews discovered that one of the tractor trailer drivers was trapped inside a “severely damaged” cab, with their legs pinned. Firefighters described the extrication effort as one of the most complex operations the department has faced in recent memory. Using heavy equipment, crews dismantled portions of the truck cab to reach and free the driver.
The individual was stabilized at the scene by paramedics and flown by medevac helicopter to UVA Medical Center due to the severity of their injuries. Officials confirmed that two other people were transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.
The Virginia State Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash. The interstate was closed in both directions for nearly three hours while recovery and investigation efforts were underway. All lanes have since reopened.
We extend our heartfelt wishes to the driver who was critically injured and to all those affected by this serious incident.
Tractor Trailer Collisions on Virginia Interstates: High Stakes and Critical Response
Crashes involving multiple tractor trailers, like the one on I-81 near Harrisonburg, are among the most dangerous and logistically complex emergencies responders face. The size and weight of commercial trucks drastically increase the potential for catastrophic injuries, especially when multiple rigs are involved, as in this early-morning wreck.
The driver who was pinned inside their cab faced a life-threatening situation requiring an extraordinary level of technical skill and inter-agency coordination. According to Harrisonburg Fire Chief Matthew Tobia, the extrication required a team effort from fire, rescue, law enforcement, medevac crews, and heavy wrecker operators—a rare but essential collaboration that ultimately saved a life.
Virginia’s Interstate 81 is a critical transportation corridor for both freight and passenger vehicles. It is also a common site for large-scale crashes due to its narrow lanes, high truck volume, and limited shoulders. Multi-vehicle crashes on I-81 frequently result in extended closures, challenging rescues, and the need for advanced trauma care.
Drivers on this corridor are urged to remain vigilant, especially when sharing the road with tractor trailers. Maintaining safe following distances, avoiding sudden lane changes, and reducing speed during low visibility hours are all essential behaviors to reduce the likelihood of serious collisions.
If you or a loved one has been injured in a truck-related crash, it is essential to seek immediate medical evaluation and access experienced guidance for both health and legal recovery. Serious injuries—especially those requiring airlift or surgical intervention—often carry long-term consequences and deserve comprehensive care.
