Hartford, CT (August 12, 2025) – A collision on I-91 southbound near Exit 33 resulted in injuries Monday afternoon, according to Hartford Police, Fire, and EMS. The crash was reported around 1:45 p.m. and involved at least one vehicle with airbag deployment.
Emergency crews from Engine 2, along with tactical and district units, responded to the scene and found a damaged vehicle prior to the exit ramp. Medical personnel evaluated those involved, and at least one injured person received on-scene treatment before being transported to a nearby hospital. The number of people injured and the extent of their conditions have not yet been released.
The incident caused traffic delays in the southbound lanes as responders worked to secure the area, treat victims, and clear debris from the roadway. Afternoon congestion was further compounded by the need to keep lanes partially closed for safety.
Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the crash, but common contributing factors in highway incidents include sudden braking, lane-change conflicts, and distracted driving.
We wish those injured a full and smooth recovery.
Highway Collisions and Airbag Deployment
The deployment of airbags, as reported in Monday’s crash, typically indicates a significant force of impact. While airbags are designed to prevent severe head and chest injuries, their activation often coincides with crashes that carry a high risk of trauma, including whiplash, fractures, and concussions.
I-91 through Hartford is a heavily traveled commuter corridor, and the area near Exit 33 sees frequent merging and lane changes—conditions that can lead to side-impact and rear-end collisions. When multiple vehicles are traveling at highway speeds, even a momentary lapse in attention can have serious consequences.
Victims of highway crashes often face more than just the immediate injury—they may experience extended recovery periods, medical expenses, and logistical difficulties from vehicle loss. Timely medical care and thorough documentation are essential for both health outcomes and insurance claims.
