Henry County, MO (May 13, 2025) – A two-vehicle crash on Missouri Highway 7 at Route PP resulted in injuries to a child passenger Saturday night. The incident occurred at approximately 8:50 p.m. on May 11 and was investigated by Corporal R.C. West of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
According to the crash report, both vehicles were traveling westbound on MO-7 when a 1997 Chevrolet 1500, driven by a 42-year-old woman from Osawatomie, Kansas, was moving at a reduced speed. As a 2020 Mercedes Sprinter attempted to pass, the Chevrolet reportedly drifted across the center line and sideswiped the Mercedes.
A 9-year-old boy riding in the Chevrolet sustained injuries in the collision. He was restrained at the time of the crash, and his mother, the driver, indicated that she would seek medical treatment for him later. Both drivers were wearing seat belts and reported no injuries. Each vehicle sustained moderate damage but was able to be driven from the scene.
Our thoughts are with the young passenger and his family. We hope for a quick and full recovery.
Sideswipe Collisions and Child Passenger Safety in Missouri
Saturday night’s collision in Henry County sheds light on the risks associated with sideswipe crashes, especially when they occur on rural highways like MO-7. While not always as severe as head-on or rear-end collisions, sideswipe incidents can be dangerous, particularly when young children are involved.
In this case, a minor driving error during a passing maneuver resulted in contact between two westbound vehicles. Though both drivers were restrained and uninjured, the 9-year-old occupant sustained minor injuries, highlighting how even low-speed impacts can affect vulnerable passengers. Thankfully, the child was properly secured, which likely prevented more serious harm.
These types of collisions are often tied to misjudged spacing, distraction, or improper lane discipline. On undivided highways such as MO-7, limited lighting and narrow shoulders increase the risk, especially during evening hours. Drivers must remain alert and cautious, even at lower speeds, to avoid veering into adjacent lanes or the path of passing vehicles.
While this crash didn’t require emergency transport, the situation still underscores the importance of post-collision medical evaluations, particularly for children, who may not immediately show symptoms of internal injuries or trauma. Parents are encouraged to seek timely care when any injury is suspected, no matter how minor it may seem.
Accidents involving child passengers can be especially stressful, and navigating the next steps—medical attention, insurance reporting, or emotional recovery—can feel overwhelming.
