Henry County, IL (August 14, 2025) – A wrong-way driving incident on I-74 westbound near milepost 29 led to a multi-vehicle crash Wednesday night, leaving two people injured. The collision occurred around 9:20 p.m., prompting a response from Illinois State Police and local emergency crews.
Investigators determined that a Ford Fusion was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes when it collided with a semi-truck headed westbound. The impact caused the Ford to stop in the westbound lanes while the semi came to a halt in the median. Moments later, a Toyota Rav4 traveling westbound was unable to avoid the stationary Ford, leading to a secondary collision.
First responders, including paramedics, assessed and treated those injured. The drivers of the Ford and Toyota were transported to area hospitals with injuries, while the semi driver was unhurt. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the wrong-way travel and subsequent crashes.
The Dangers of Wrong-Way Driving in Illinois
Wrong-way crashes, like the one on I-74 in Henry County, are among the most dangerous types of collisions due to the high speeds and head-on impacts they often involve. In Illinois, these incidents frequently occur at night, when visibility is reduced, and driver impairment or confusion may be contributing factors.
Statewide data shows that wrong-way driving crashes, though less frequent than other collision types, result in disproportionately high rates of severe injury and fatality. Prevention measures, including clearer roadway signage, median barriers, and public awareness campaigns, continue to be emphasized by transportation authorities.
For those involved in wrong-way crashes, recovery can be lengthy and complex. Victims often face significant medical expenses, vehicle loss, and emotional trauma. Documenting the incident, seeking immediate care, and understanding legal options are essential steps toward recovery.
