Hibbing, MN (August 21, 2025) – A crash involving a passenger vehicle and a tow truck resulted in injuries Wednesday morning in Hibbing. The incident took place around 8:16 a.m. on Highway 37 near the intersection with South Dublin Road in St. Louis County.
According to officials from the Minnesota State Patrol, both vehicles were traveling westbound on Highway 37 when the collision occurred. The tow truck, a 2012 Ford F550 driven by 52-year-old Randy Michael Jacobson of Iron, was preparing to make a left turn onto South Dublin Road when it was rear-ended by a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox.
The driver of the Equinox, identified as 44-year-old Jonathan Charles Lind of Hibbing, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Fairview Hospital for treatment. Authorities noted that Lind was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. His vehicle’s airbags deployed upon impact.
The driver of the tow truck was uninjured and did not require medical care. Dry road conditions were reported at the time of the incident, and there was no indication of alcohol involvement for either driver.
Emergency response was handled by St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, Hibbing Police Department, and Hibbing Fire/EMS. Officials have completed the preliminary investigation, and no citations have been announced as of this writing.
We extend our thoughts to Mr. Lind and wish him a smooth and full recovery.
Rear-End Collisions and Injury Risks in Minnesota
Rear-end crashes, such as the one that occurred on Highway 37, are among the most frequent types of traffic accidents—and can lead to serious injuries, especially when seat belts are not in use. Even at moderate speeds, the force of a rear-end impact can result in whiplash, head injuries, or spinal trauma for the occupants of the striking vehicle.
This incident also highlights the dangers of inattentive driving in transition zones, such as intersections or turn lanes. While the tow truck was slowing to make a lawful left turn, the following vehicle failed to react in time—a common factor in rear-end collisions. In many cases, distracted driving or following too closely plays a significant role.
For the injured driver, the road to recovery will likely involve not only physical healing, but also coordination with insurance providers and potentially legal proceedings—especially in cases where injury occurred and seat belt use was not observed.
Local drivers should take this incident as a reminder to always maintain a safe following distance, wear seat belts, and stay alert—particularly when traveling on secondary highways and rural connectors like Highway 37 in St. Louis County.
