Hilo, HI (January 17, 2026) – A man was killed and a woman injured in a head-on collision on Highway 19 near Hikina Place, according to Hawaii Island police. Emergency responders, including medics and fire personnel, arrived swiftly to aid the victims, but one driver could not be saved.
The crash occurred just before 6:30 p.m. on January 16. Authorities say a 2017 Ford F-150 pickup truck traveling southbound on Highway 19 crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a northbound 2022 Chevy Silverado. The driver of the Ford was found unresponsive at the scene. Despite life-saving efforts by emergency crews, he was pronounced dead shortly before 7 p.m.
The driver of the Chevy Silverado, a 46-year-old woman from Laupahoehoe, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center for treatment.
Police believe speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. The identity of the deceased man is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of his next of kin. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the official cause of death.
The Hawaii Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit continues to investigate the circumstances of the collision.
