Hopkinton, NH (August 5, 2025) – A violent rollover crash on Interstate 89 South left three people seriously injured on Monday afternoon in Hopkinton. The incident, which occurred at approximately 3:25 p.m. on August 4, also resulted in temporary highway closures and a multi-agency emergency response.
New Hampshire State Troopers from the Troop D barracks arrived at the scene near mile marker 9.4 to find a 2003 Toyota Matrix overturned and partially crushed after colliding with a 2017 VW Golf. Both vehicles came to rest in the wooded median between the northbound and southbound lanes, where several trees had fallen on top of them, complicating rescue operations.
All three occupants of the Toyota Matrix sustained serious injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. The driver of the VW Golf was also hospitalized as a precautionary measure, but was not reported to be seriously hurt.
Rescue crews from Hopkinton, Henniker, Concord, Weare, and Bow fire departments assisted in the extrication and treatment of the victims. The New Hampshire Department of Transportation also responded to the scene to aid with lane closures and traffic management.
Southbound I-89 was fully shut down for over an hour to allow emergency teams to safely remove the victims and clear the wreckage. One lane was reopened shortly afterward as crash reconstruction teams continued their investigation. The identities of the individuals involved have not been released as authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
Our thoughts are with those who were seriously injured in this devastating crash, and we wish them a full and swift recovery.
Rollover Collisions and Median Crossovers on New Hampshire Interstates
Rollover crashes like the one reported Monday on I-89 are among the most dangerous types of roadway incidents, often resulting in life-threatening injuries due to the violent motion of the vehicle and the likelihood of occupant entrapment. In this case, the added complexity of falling trees and a secondary vehicle entanglement made the emergency response even more challenging.
The area around mile marker 9.4 on I-89 features wooded median zones that can pose significant hazards when vehicles veer off the roadway or cross into oncoming traffic. Median crossovers, although relatively rare, can lead to high-impact collisions, particularly when trees or terrain complicate a vehicle’s path.
Extrications from overturned or off-road vehicles often take longer, which is why multiple fire departments from neighboring towns were needed to assist. Serious injuries in these crashes can include internal trauma, fractures, spinal damage, or head injuries, making rapid and skilled rescue efforts essential.
Drivers on New Hampshire interstates are reminded to always wear seatbelts, maintain safe speeds, and exercise caution, especially in areas where roadside conditions can magnify the impact of a crash. While the investigation is ongoing, the need for careful driving and timely emergency response remains clear.
