Motorcycle Safety on Coastal Highways
Crashes involving motorcycles are often more severe due to the limited protection riders have compared to occupants of larger vehicles. Highways like US-17 Bypass—popular with both local and tourist traffic—are especially risky during morning hours when visibility can be reduced and driver attentiveness may be low.
The South Carolina Department of Public Safety reports that motorcycle accidents have been steadily increasing along the Grand Strand area. Many of these collisions occur in multi-lane environments where motorcycles can be obscured in blind spots or misjudged in speed during lane changes and turns.
Motorcyclists are urged to wear protective gear, use daytime headlights, and adopt defensive riding strategies, particularly on busy routes like the 17 Bypass. Meanwhile, drivers of cars and trucks are reminded to double-check mirrors and blind spots and allow motorcyclists ample space to maneuver.
Following an accident, it’s crucial for those involved to seek medical attention, file an official report, and document all evidence at the scene. These actions can significantly impact insurance claims and legal proceedings if long-term effects arise from the injuries.
