Horry County, SC – Motorcyclist Injured in Crash on Hwy 17 Bypass at Deerfield Links Dr

May 16, 2025

Horry County, SC (May 16, 2025) – A two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle sent one person to the hospital Friday morning on the Highway 17 Bypass near Deerfield Links Dr, according to Horry County Fire Rescue. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene at approximately 7:45 a.m., where they provided immediate care and managed traffic disruptions in the area.

Medics and fire crews worked to assist those suffering from injuries after the collision. One individual was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment. The extent of the injuries has not been disclosed, but authorities confirmed that traffic lanes were still partially blocked as of 8:13 a.m. while the scene was cleared.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol has launched an investigation to determine what led to the crash.

Our thoughts are with the person injured in this accident, and we hope for their quick and complete recovery.

Motorcycle Safety on Coastal Highways

Crashes involving motorcycles are often more severe due to the limited protection riders have compared to occupants of larger vehicles. Highways like US-17 Bypass—popular with both local and tourist traffic—are especially risky during morning hours when visibility can be reduced and driver attentiveness may be low.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety reports that motorcycle accidents have been steadily increasing along the Grand Strand area. Many of these collisions occur in multi-lane environments where motorcycles can be obscured in blind spots or misjudged in speed during lane changes and turns.

Motorcyclists are urged to wear protective gear, use daytime headlights, and adopt defensive riding strategies, particularly on busy routes like the 17 Bypass. Meanwhile, drivers of cars and trucks are reminded to double-check mirrors and blind spots and allow motorcyclists ample space to maneuver.

Following an accident, it’s crucial for those involved to seek medical attention, file an official report, and document all evidence at the scene. These actions can significantly impact insurance claims and legal proceedings if long-term effects arise from the injuries.
