Hot Springs, SD (July 14, 2025) – A fatal aircraft accident occurred on Saturday afternoon near Hot Springs Airport, resulting in one death and one injury, according to the Hot Springs Volunteer Fire Department. The crash was reported just before 1:30 p.m. when a caller reported that a small aircraft had gone down north of the airport.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed that the aircraft involved was a Piper PA-25 Pawnee, which crashed during glider towing operations. The person killed in the incident has not yet been identified publicly, pending notification of next of kin. Another individual was injured and transported for treatment; their condition has not been disclosed.
Emergency crews responded promptly to the scene, and NTSB investigators are expected to arrive Sunday to begin a formal investigation. A preliminary report outlining basic facts will be released in the coming weeks. However, the full investigation to determine the cause of the crash could take up to two years.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and wish a full recovery to the injured party.
Understanding Aviation Accidents and Investigations in South Dakota
General aviation operations like glider towing carry inherent risks, particularly in remote or rural airports. The Piper PA-25 Pawnee, commonly used in agricultural and glider towing roles, requires precision handling, especially during takeoff and low-altitude maneuvering.
When aircraft crashes occur, multiple agencies, including the NTSB and FAA, are involved in determining what went wrong. While the preliminary report shares factual findings, it is not meant to establish fault or cause. That analysis comes with the final report, which involves examining pilot logs, aircraft maintenance records, weather conditions, and witness statements.
For families impacted by aviation tragedies, the emotional toll can be immense. Legal and financial questions often follow, including rights to compensation in cases involving potential mechanical failure or procedural lapses. Professional guidance can help survivors and families navigate these processes while they grieve.
