Houston County, TX (September 5, 2025) – A devastating head-on crash in Houston County on Wednesday evening claimed the lives of two children and left three others seriously injured, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). The collision occurred at approximately 5:38 p.m. on State Highway 7, just west of FM 232.
Authorities say a Ford F-350 traveling westbound veered across the center line and collided head-on with an eastbound Lexus. Inside the Lexus was 63-year-old Amanda Sparks of Kennard, along with a 5-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy. Tragically, both children were pronounced dead at the scene. One child had been riding in the front seat, while the other was seated in the back.
Sparks was airlifted from the scene with serious injuries. The driver of the Ford, 25-year-old Charles Spikes of Huntsville, was also seriously hurt and transported to a nearby hospital. Emergency crews responded swiftly to the crash, which left both vehicles with extensive front-end damage and closed the area to traffic during the investigation and cleanup.
State troopers are continuing to examine the circumstances leading up to the collision, including what may have caused the Ford F-350 to cross into oncoming traffic. No additional updates have been released at this time.
Our hearts go out to the families affected by this tragic event, and we extend our deepest condolences to all who are grieving.
Fatal Crashes and Community Impact in Rural Texas
Head-on collisions remain among the most catastrophic types of roadway incidents, especially on rural highways like State Hwy 7 where speeds are high and visibility may be limited. In cases such as this—where a vehicle crosses into oncoming lanes—the outcome is often devastating.
The loss of two young lives in this Houston County crash has shaken the local community and highlights the urgent need for continued focus on rural traffic safety. Roads like FM 232 and Hwy 7 serve as major routes for families, local travelers, and commercial drivers, but lack many of the safety features present on urban roadways. In such areas, a single moment of distraction or miscalculation can lead to irreversible consequences.
Serious injuries from head-on crashes often include traumatic brain injuries, internal organ damage, or spinal trauma. Victims like Amanda Sparks and Charles Spikes will likely face long and difficult recoveries—physically, emotionally, and financially. In tragic cases involving children, the emotional toll on families and communities is immeasurable.
Support for families involved in fatal or severe injury crashes often includes grief counseling, legal guidance, and long-term recovery planning. Those affected may also need help accessing official crash reports, medical records, and appropriate care resources.
