Highway Safety: The Dangers of Parked Vehicles on the Shoulder
Accidents involving parked vehicles on highways, such as the one on I-95, highlight the significant risks posed to drivers. When vehicles stop on the shoulder, whether due to mechanical failure, emergency situations, or other reasons, they become hazards for passing traffic, particularly on high-speed highways like I-95.
To reduce the risk of such collisions, drivers should always remain vigilant and be prepared to take action if they see a stationary vehicle or obstruction in their path. Maintaining a safe following distance, especially in areas with low visibility or poorly marked shoulders, can provide additional time to react.
If involved in an accident involving a stationary vehicle, it’s crucial to seek medical attention immediately, even if injuries seem minor at first. Whiplash, head injuries, and other trauma may not be immediately apparent but can have long-term consequences. Documenting the scene and filing a police report will help with insurance claims and potential legal actions.
