Huntsville, AL (July 31, 2025) – A serious crash involving a dump truck caused significant property damage and injured three people Wednesday afternoon in Huntsville. The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of Carl T. Jones Dr and Ledges Dr, when a dump truck lost control and plowed into a Target store in the Jones Valley area.
According to Huntsville Police Department officials, the dump truck was descending Ledges Drive when it reportedly experienced a mechanical brake failure. The vehicle was unable to stop and proceeded through the intersection at Carl T. Jones Dr, striking a passenger vehicle that had been stopped at a red light. The driver of that vehicle was not injured, though their car sustained considerable damage.
The dump truck continued across the intersection and crashed into the exterior of the Target building, trapping its driver and injuring a passenger inside the truck. Huntsville Fire and Rescue crews responded swiftly and worked for nearly two hours to extricate the driver from the wreckage.
HEMSI officials confirmed that the dump truck passenger was taken to Huntsville Hospital Trauma Services with injuries that were not life-threatening. The driver, once freed, was also transported for medical evaluation and was listed in stable condition. A third individual is being assessed for injuries at this time.
Officials said that the structural damage to the Target store was largely limited to the outer wall, and the store has remained open following the incident. No shoppers or staff inside the store were harmed.
Due to the severity of the crash, a member of the Huntsville Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit was assigned to lead the investigation. As of now, no criminal charges have been filed, and the incident appears to be mechanical in nature.

Truck Accidents and Mechanical Failures in Alabama
Crashes involving heavy trucks—especially those experiencing brake or mechanical failure—can lead to devastating consequences for both the drivers and the public. In this Huntsville incident, a brake malfunction on a steep descent turned a routine workday into a dangerous emergency, highlighting the importance of proper vehicle maintenance and emergency readiness.
Dump trucks and other commercial vehicles carry immense momentum, making them particularly hazardous if they lose braking control. In this case, the truck struck another vehicle, entered a major intersection, and ultimately crashed into a retail structure. The injuries sustained and the extended extrication effort illustrate how severe and complex these crashes can be.
For those injured, the aftermath involves more than physical recovery. Medical bills, work loss, trauma, and insurance complications often follow. It’s essential for victims and their families to understand their rights and ensure that a thorough investigation—covering mechanical systems, maintenance records, and operator safety—takes place.
Additionally, retail properties and local businesses impacted by such crashes may also seek structural assessments and legal review to recover from unexpected losses.
