Iberia Parish, LA (May 28, 2025) – A tragic crash in Iberia Parish claimed the lives of two Abbeville residents Wednesday after their vehicle collided with a truck at the intersection of Rip Van Winkle Rd and Louisiana Highway 675.
The incident occurred when a 2012 Nissan Cube, driven by 69-year-old Donald P. Gremillion, reportedly failed to stop at a stop sign while approaching the highway. The vehicle entered the path of a Ford F-150 that was traveling along LA-675, resulting in a devastating collision.
Both Donald P. Gremillion and his passenger, 69-year-old Gerrilynn Gremillion, were tragically pronounced dead at the scene. The occupants of the Ford truck were not injured in the crash.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident. Toxicology samples were obtained from the driver of the Nissan and have been submitted for analysis, while the driver of the Ford submitted to a breathalyzer test, which returned negative.
The area around Rip Van Winkle Rd and LA-675 was temporarily closed while emergency crews responded and investigators documented the scene. No charges have been filed at this time.
Our hearts go out to the Gremillion family and all those grieving this tragic loss.
Deadly Rural Intersection Crashes in Louisiana
Rural intersections in Louisiana—particularly those without active traffic lights—are among the most dangerous locations for deadly collisions. The crash at Rip Van Winkle Rd and LA-675 illustrates how quickly a momentary oversight at a stop sign can result in irreversible consequences.
These intersections often suffer from poor visibility, limited signage, and higher speeds along cross traffic routes. Drivers unfamiliar with an area or distracted while approaching may fail to notice or respond in time to stop requirements. In such collisions, the impact is often side-on or offset, leading to a higher probability of fatal outcomes, especially in smaller passenger vehicles.
This tragic loss in Iberia Parish is a solemn reminder of the importance of vigilance at every intersection, no matter how rural or seemingly quiet the road may appear. Continued efforts to improve signage visibility, enforce speed limits, and enhance driver awareness campaigns are vital to reducing these all-too-frequent tragedies.
For the loved ones left behind, the loss is compounded by sudden grief, legal proceedings, and complex questions surrounding fault and responsibility. Having access to supportive, accurate resources can make a difference in the days and weeks ahead.
