The collision occurred around 10:31 p.m., drawing a rapid response from Engine 11, Ambulance 27, and EMS 92. The victim, a 47-year-old man, was reportedly struck by a silver SUV near the Salvation Army facility before the vehicle fled the scene.
Emergency responders arrived within minutes and began treatment on the injured individual, who was found awake but uncooperative with paramedics. On-scene medics reported visible injuries including bruising to both hips, an abrasion to the back, and trauma to the left eyebrow. The man was eventually transported from the scene for further evaluation, though his full condition remains unclear.

Officials are currently working to identify the driver responsible, and no arrests have been made at this time.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the hit-and-run, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact local authorities.

Hit-and-Run Accidents in Indiana
Pedestrian-related hit-and-run crashes—like the one reported Monday night near the Salvation Army on E Washington St—continue to pose a significant public safety concern in urban areas such as Downtown Indianapolis. These incidents often happen in poorly lit or congested areas, and in many cases, the driver leaves the scene before help can be rendered.
In Indiana, leaving the scene of a collision involving injury is a serious offense under state law. Pedestrian crashes often lead to complex injuries due to the sheer vulnerability of individuals on foot. In this case, the fact that the victim was thrown a significant distance from the point of impact highlights the force involved and the risks pedestrians face even on sidewalks.
City officials and neighborhood leaders in Council District 18, represented by Kristin Jones, continue to advocate for safer pedestrian infrastructure and improved lighting in high-traffic corridors. Crashes like this one serve as a reminder that both drivers and pedestrians must remain alert and cautious, especially during evening hours when visibility is reduced.
