Hit-and-Run Collisions in Indianapolis
Hit-and-run accidents—particularly those involving pedestrians—remain a growing safety concern across Indianapolis neighborhoods, including the Near Southside. Monday’s crash on S Delaware St near Raymond St illustrates how quickly these incidents can unfold, often leaving victims without immediate help.
In this case, the victim survived the initial impact and sought help nearby, but the failure of the driver to remain at the scene adds another layer of trauma and legal complexity. Indiana law requires all drivers to stop and provide aid in the event of an accident involving injury or death. Fleeing the scene is a criminal offense and can carry significant penalties.
S Delaware St and surrounding roads are part of a busy corridor connecting residential areas with major routes. Lack of crosswalks, limited visibility at certain intersections, and speeding are all contributing factors to pedestrian-related crashes in the area. City Council District 18, represented by Kristin Jones, has been engaged in efforts to improve street safety and reduce traffic-related harm in these communities.
