Iron County, UT (August 2, 2025) – A California man was airlifted to the hospital after crashing his motorcycle on state Route 14 in Iron County Friday afternoon, August 1, about 19 miles east of Cedar City.
The crash happened around 1:00 PM as a group of four motorcyclists traveled eastbound on SR-14. According to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Bambi Baie, one rider, failed to navigate a curve, veered off to the right side of the road, and crashed into a field. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.
Emergency personnel from the Iron County Sheriff’s Office, Brian Head Public Safety, Utah Highway Patrol, Gold Cross Ambulance, and Intermountain Life Flight responded to the scene. The injured rider was transported by Life Flight helicopter to St. George Regional Hospital due to concerns about a potential head injury. Fortunately, he remained alert and conscious throughout the response and is expected to make a full recovery.
The man, reportedly in his mid-60s, was wearing a helmet and proper riding gear, which authorities credit with helping prevent more severe outcomes. His Harley-Davidson CVO sustained major damage and was removed from the scene.
Motorcycle Safety and Canyon Riding in Utah
Motorcycle riders on scenic but winding routes like SR-14 in Iron County must contend with elevation changes, sharp curves, and rapidly shifting weather conditions. These elements make safety gear and defensive riding practices essential.
The Utah Department of Public Safety emphasizes the importance of wearing DOT-approved helmets and visibility-enhancing gear, especially when riding in remote or mountainous areas. In 2024 alone, Utah saw over 1,000 motorcycle-related injury crashes, many occurring on popular recreation routes like SR-14.
Riders are encouraged to reduce speed before entering curves, remain vigilant for wildlife or gravel, and ride in staggered formations to maintain proper spacing. Helmet use remains the single most effective way to reduce head injury in a crash—a point echoed by first responders in this incident.
