Jacksboro, TX (September 12, 2025) – A deadly collision involving two vehicles occurred Tuesday afternoon about 17 miles southeast of Jacksboro on State Highway 199, resulting in one fatality and two injuries, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
The crash was reported at approximately 4:52 p.m. on September 9. A 2012 Dodge Charger was heading southbound on FM 2201 when, according to officials, the driver failed to stop at the intersection with SH 199. As the Charger entered the intersection, it was struck on the driver’s side by a 2017 GMC Sierra that was towing a 2025 PJ Trailer and traveling northwest on SH 199.
The driver of the Charger, 33-year-old Carl Lorne James Thomas of Mineral Wells, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger in the GMC Sierra—Tommy Herman Sizemore, 54, and Chrystal Irene Reiten, 47, both of Bridgeport—suffered non-incapacitating injuries and were transported to Faith Community Hospital in Jacksboro for treatment.
Troopers remained on the scene for hours as investigators worked to document the crash and interview witnesses.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Carl Lorne James Thomas, and we extend our hopes for a full recovery to those who were injured in this tragic incident.
Deadly Rural Crashes in Texas
Deadly crashes on rural highways such as SH 199 near Jacksboro underscore the dangers drivers face when approaching major intersections with limited visibility or reduced signage. This particular collision, which involved a vehicle reportedly running a stop sign, is a tragic reminder of how a single decision can have irreversible consequences.
In Texas, rural roads are the site of a disproportionate number of fatal crashes. Though they often carry lighter traffic than urban areas, rural intersections like the one at FM 2201 and SH 199 can be deceptively dangerous. High speeds, infrequent stop signs, and wide open approaches increase the chances of catastrophic T-bone collisions—especially when a driver fails to yield.
For survivors, the aftermath of such crashes can bring lasting trauma, both physical and emotional. Injured individuals often need extensive care, while grieving families must cope with the sudden loss of a loved one. These moments also place focus on community healthcare systems, such as Faith Community Hospital, which play a vital role in rural trauma response.
