Jackson County, MO (August 11, 2025) – Two men were injured on Saturday afternoon in a rear-end crash on northbound Interstate 55 at McNutt St, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The collision occurred around 2:00 p.m. when traffic slowed for congestion ahead.
Troopers say a 2021 Volkswagen Atlas, driven by a 47-year-old man from Hot Springs National, AR, was traveling northbound and slowing when it was struck from behind by a 2007 Ford F-150 driven by a 55-year-old man from Wentzville, MO. The Volkswagen sustained moderate damage, while the Ford was totaled. Both vehicles were towed from the scene by McCains Towing.
The Volkswagen’s driver suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Mercy Jefferson Hospital by Joachim Plattin Ambulance District. The Ford’s driver was also injured, though details on his condition were not released.
Rear-End Collisions in Missouri
Rear-end crashes are among the most common types of roadway collisions and frequently occur during periods of traffic congestion. Even at lower speeds, the force of a rear-end impact can cause significant vehicle damage and lead to injuries such as whiplash, back strain, or concussions. Saturday’s crash on I-55 demonstrates the importance of maintaining a safe following distance and remaining alert to sudden slowdowns in traffic.
Missouri traffic safety officials emphasize that distracted driving, tailgating, and speeding are major contributors to rear-end collisions. Drivers can reduce the risk by maintaining at least a three-second gap between vehicles, adjusting speed for traffic flow, and avoiding distractions while behind the wheel.
