Jackson County, MO (August 25, 2025) – A three-vehicle crash on southbound I-470 left one man seriously injured and two vehicles totaled Saturday evening. The incident occurred at mile marker 15.4 just before 6:00 PM and was investigated by Corporal C. Purnell of Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop A.
According to the crash report, a 2007 Nissan Maxima driven by a 30-year-old man from Kansas City crossed the center of the roadway under unknown circumstances. The vehicle struck a 2012 Ford Explorer traveling southbound, causing severe damage to both vehicles. The Maxima then slid further and collided with a third vehicle—a 2018 Honda Odyssey—driven by a 37-year-old man from Pleasant Hill.
The 73-year-old driver of the Explorer, a resident of Peculiar, MO, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Centerpoint Medical Center by the Lee’s Summit Fire Department. He had been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The other two drivers were reportedly uninjured, though both the Maxima and the Explorer were towed from the scene due to extensive damage. The Odyssey sustained only minor damage and was driven away.
Authorities were assisted at the scene by the Lee’s Summit and Independence Police Departments. The investigation into why the Maxima crossed the center of the highway is ongoing.
Our thoughts are with the injured driver, and we wish him a full and swift recovery.
Centerline Crossovers and Multi-Vehicle Crashes in Missouri
This serious collision on I-470 illustrates the high-risk nature of centerline crossover crashes—particularly on multi-lane highways where traffic is fast-moving and dense. When a vehicle unexpectedly veers into oncoming lanes, there is often little time for others to react, resulting in head-on or angle collisions that are frequently severe.
In this incident, the 2007 Nissan Maxima’s sudden movement into southbound lanes created a chain-reaction crash involving two additional vehicles, one of which was completely destroyed. The 73-year-old man in the Ford Explorer suffered serious injuries despite wearing a seatbelt, underscoring the violent nature of the impact.
Crossover incidents can stem from driver inattention, impairment, medical emergencies, or mechanical failure. Regardless of the cause, the outcome is often devastating for victims, especially elderly drivers who are more susceptible to injury.
Major roadways like I-470 in Jackson County serve thousands of drivers daily. Preventing these types of crashes involves both individual responsibility—such as staying alert and avoiding distractions—and infrastructure safety, including median barriers and rumble strips where feasible.
For victims and their families, recovering from a serious crash can be physically, emotionally, and financially draining. Medical treatment, rehabilitation, and navigating insurance or legal processes may require professional guidance.
