Vernon, LA (May 13, 2025) – A tragic two-vehicle collision in Jackson Parish claimed the life of one person and left two others seriously injured Sunday afternoon. The crash occurred shortly before 12:00 p.m. on May 11, 2025, along Riser Road just north of LA Highway 148, according to Louisiana State Police Troop F.
Troopers report that 26-year-old Tayvionne Tate of Jonesboro was fatally injured in the crash. He was riding as a front-seat passenger in a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu driven by 25-year-old Janihajious Phillips. For reasons still under investigation, Phillips’ vehicle crossed over the center line and collided head-on with a 2024 Nissan Versa traveling southbound on Riser Road.
Tate, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries. Phillips also was not restrained and suffered serious injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The driver of the Nissan, who was properly restrained, also sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized.
Authorities believe impairment may have played a role in the crash. Routine toxicology samples have been collected from both drivers and are pending analysis. Louisiana State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Tayvionne Tate. We also extend our thoughts and support to those recovering from injuries.
The Role of Seatbelt Use and Impairment in Louisiana Crashes
Head-on collisions, such as the one that occurred on Riser Road, are among the most dangerous types of crashes due to the direct transfer of force between two moving vehicles. In rural areas like Jackson Parish, where higher speeds and fewer lane divisions are common, a single moment of inattention or impairment can lead to devastating outcomes.
This heartbreaking crash illustrates two ongoing public safety challenges in Louisiana: seatbelt non-use and impaired driving. According to preliminary findings, neither occupant of the Malibu was wearing a seatbelt, which significantly increased the severity of their injuries. Tragically, Tayvionne Tate’s life may have been spared had he been properly restrained.
In contrast, the Nissan driver—who was wearing a seatbelt—also suffered serious injuries but survived the crash. This comparison underscores the life-saving importance of restraint systems during high-impact collisions.
The suspected role of impairment in this crash also highlights the continuing need for education and enforcement. Louisiana authorities regularly remind the public that driving under the influence—whether of alcohol, drugs, or a combination—puts not only the driver at risk but everyone else on the road.
As troopers continue their investigation, communities across Jackson Parish are reminded of the importance of defensive driving, seatbelt use, and reporting impaired drivers when seen.
