Jamestown Twp., MI – Hastings Man Airlifted After Crash at 48th Ave & Byron Rd

September 24, 2025

Jamestown Twp., MI (September 24, 2025) – A serious two-vehicle crash in Ottawa County left a 40-year-old man from Hastings hospitalized after being pinned inside his car when it was struck by a truck near the intersection of 48th Ave and Byron Rd. The accident occurred around 4:00 PM Tuesday in Jamestown Township.

According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, the man was driving a 2013 Audi northbound on 48th Ave when he failed to stop at a posted sign at Byron Rd. As he entered the intersection, his vehicle was struck by a 2006 Ford F-550 pulling an asphalt trailer.

The impact forced both vehicles off the roadway. The Audi rolled onto its side, with the Ford truck landing on top of it. Emergency crews from Jamestown and Zeeland Township Fire Departments responded swiftly to extricate the Hastings man, who had become trapped inside the crushed vehicle.

He sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a local hospital for emergency care. The driver of the truck was unharmed in the crash.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident to determine all contributing factors.

Our thoughts are with the injured man and his loved ones during this time.

Intersection Crashes and Injury Risks in Rural Michigan

Intersections in rural areas, like 48th Ave and Byron Rd in Jamestown Township, pose unique dangers. Limited visibility, higher speeds, and infrequent traffic controls can all contribute to high-impact crashes, particularly when drivers miss or disregard stop signs.

In Ottawa County and other parts of rural Michigan, collisions involving heavy utility vehicles and passenger cars often result in severe consequences due to the weight disparity. Data from the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning highlights that many intersection crashes occur at stop-controlled junctions where failure to yield is a primary factor.

The use of seatbelts and quick action by fire personnel in this case likely prevented the outcome from being even worse. Still, serious injuries can have lasting effects, requiring long-term treatment and rehabilitation.

Victims of crashes involving commercial or utility trucks often face complex insurance and legal situations. Knowing your rights and having access to accurate information and support resources is crucial in the aftermath of such events.
