Bicycle Fatalities in Missouri
Bicyclists are among the most vulnerable road users due to their lack of physical protection in a collision. Crashes involving bicycles and motor vehicles, especially on rural or high-speed routes like Route 66, often result in severe or fatal injuries. Nighttime riding increases the danger significantly due to reduced visibility for both cyclists and drivers.
Missouri safety officials urge cyclists to use proper lighting, wear reflective gear, and ride as far to the right as practicable when sharing the road. Drivers are reminded to provide at least three feet of clearance when passing a cyclist and to remain alert for their presence, particularly in low-light conditions.
